A hand pallet truck looks simple, but choosing the wrong one costs you productivity every single day. Here is what to check before you buy.
1. Capacity
Standard trucks are rated at 2500 kg; 3000 kg and 5000 kg models are available for heavier loads. Always size for your heaviest regular pallet, not the average — overloading shortens pump life and is unsafe.
2. Fork length and width
The most common fork size in India is 1150 mm long with 550 mm or 685 mm overall width. Euro pallets suit 550 mm; Indian and CHEP style pallets often need 685 mm. Paper reels, long crates and double pallets call for 2000 mm forks.
3. Wheel material
- Nylon wheels roll easiest on smooth concrete and resist chemicals.
- Polyurethane (PU) wheels are quieter and gentler on epoxy or tiled floors.
- Rubber wheels suit uneven or outdoor surfaces.
4. Special environments
Food, pharma and cold rooms need a stainless steel pallet truck that will not rust or contaminate product. Low-profile trucks are required for skid pallets with 51 mm clearance.
5. Frequency of use
If your team moves pallets over long distances or more than a few dozen times per shift, step up to a battery operated pallet truck (BOPT). Powered travel pays for itself quickly in throughput and reduced fatigue.
